Ship a Car to Tanzania from the UK: Costs & Inspection

Shipping a standard car from the UK to Tanzania usually means budgeting £850 to £1,250 for sea freight, plus collection, documents, insurance, inspection and destination costs. The key compliance step is Tanzania's pre-export conformity and roadworthiness process: check the current TBS route before the car is loaded.

The short version

  • Planning freight. £850–£1,250 for a standard car, with five to seven weeks as a broad timeline.
  • Inspection before export. Tanzania Bureau of Standards controls used-vehicle conformity under PVoC.
  • Certificate matters. Arrange the required roadworthiness/conformity evidence through the current TBS-authorised contractor before shipping.
  • No borrowed Kenya rule. Do not apply Kenya's eight-year limit to Tanzania; confirm current Tanzanian eligibility and tax for the exact vehicle.
  • Right-hand drive is normal. UK RHD vehicles fit Tanzania's left-driving road layout, but that fact alone does not guarantee import approval.

What does it cost to ship a car to Tanzania?

For a standard running car, £850–£1,250 is a useful 2026 sea-freight planning range to Dar es Salaam. The actual quote changes with vehicle dimensions, carrier space, route and shipping method. Add UK collection, export documentation, marine insurance and the required inspection. Tanzanian customs, port, broker, storage and registration costs are separate.

What inspection is required before shipping?

The Tanzania Bureau of Standards operates a Pre-Export Verification of Conformity programme. TBS notices for used UK vehicles require inspection before export and a certificate demonstrating conformity/roadworthiness. A non-compliant shipment can face penalties, rejection or other costly action at destination.

Authorised providers, booking details and fees can change. Before you book freight, use the current contact or contractor shown by TBS, provide the vehicle details and obtain written confirmation of the inspection and certificate required for that sailing.

Inspection first, loading second. Do not rely on an old agent name or fee copied from a forum. Confirm the current TBS-authorised route and make sure the certificate details match the VIN.

Is there an age limit or RHD-only rule?

Online shipping pages often copy Kenya's hard eight-year rule into Tanzania guidance. That is not a safe assumption. Tanzania may apply age-related tax treatment and current standards, but you should check the exact vehicle against current TBS and Tanzania Revenue Authority requirements rather than using a neighbouring country's rule.

Tanzania drives on the left, so a normal UK right-hand-drive vehicle matches the local road layout. That does not turn RHD into a complete eligibility test. Special vehicles, altered vehicles and other configurations still need an individual check.

What taxes will Tanzania charge?

Tanzanian import charges depend on the vehicle's customs value, type, age, engine and current tax schedule. The landed calculation can include import duty, excise treatment, VAT and local levies or fees. Because small changes in the vehicle details can materially change the total, a generic percentage is not a responsible quote.

Ask a licensed Tanzanian clearing agent for a written assessment against the VIN, make, model, engine capacity, first-registration date, invoice and freight amount. If the landed tax makes the purchase uneconomic, discover that before the car leaves Britain.

Documents to prepare

How the process works

  1. Check eligibility and tax. Send the exact details to the inspector and Tanzanian broker.
  2. Book and pass inspection. Obtain the correct certificate before loading.
  3. Confirm the quote. Review collection, freight, documents, insurance and exclusions.
  4. Complete UK export. Move the vehicle to the depot and file the customs entry.
  5. Send arrival documents early. Give the clearing agent the bill of lading and certificate before discharge.
  6. Clear Dar es Salaam. Pay assessed taxes and port/agent charges promptly to reduce storage risk.
  7. Register locally. Complete the applicable Tanzanian vehicle registration before road use.

Tanzania car shipping questions

Does Tanzania use Kenya's eight-year import rule?

Do not assume so. Tanzania has its own conformity and tax framework. Check the exact vehicle with TBS and a current Tanzanian customs professional rather than copying Kenya's rule.

Must the car be inspected in the UK?

Used UK vehicles are covered by the TBS pre-export conformity process. Confirm and complete the current authorised inspection and obtain the correct certificate before loading.

How long does the shipment take?

Five to seven weeks is a practical planning range for export handling and freight to Dar es Salaam. Sailing changes and customs clearance can extend the end-to-end journey.

Can I pack goods inside the car?

Do not assume this is allowed. RoRo vehicles are normally empty, and undeclared goods create customs and security problems. Ask for written approval before placing anything in the vehicle.
