Ship a Car to South Africa from the UK: Permit Guide
Shipping a used car from the UK to South Africa is possible only in restricted circumstances. The important question is not the freight price; it is whether you qualify for an import permit. For an eligible standard vehicle, sea freight commonly falls around £900 to £1,500, but you should not book the shipment until the required South African approvals are in place.
The short version
- Used imports are restricted. South Africa does not operate an open market for ordinary used-car imports.
- Get approval first. An ITAC import permit and NRCS Letter of Authority are core requirements.
- Typical qualifying cases. Returning South African nationals, permanent immigrants and limited special categories may qualify.
- Planning freight. Allow roughly £900–£1,500 before UK collection, insurance, South African taxes and local fees.
- Never ship first and apply later. The authorities explicitly require the permit before the vehicle is shipped.
Who can import a used car into South Africa?
The South African government's official used-vehicle import guidance says second-hand vehicles may be imported only after an ITAC permit has been obtained. Importation is restricted to defined circumstances, including returning South African nationals and permanent immigrants. Other limited categories include certain inherited, vintage, racing and specially designed vehicles.
That means buying a cheaper UK used car and importing it as a normal South African consumer is generally not an available route. Your personal status, ownership history and vehicle category determine whether the application can succeed.
What permits and clearance documents are needed?
The two approvals to plan around are:
- ITAC import permit. Issued by the International Trade Administration Commission. It establishes that the restricted used vehicle may be imported.
- NRCS Letter of Authority. The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications checks the vehicle against applicable safety requirements.
The South African Revenue Service also identifies the import permit, NRCS Letter of Authority and supporting vehicle documents in the clearance process, and refers to police/Interpol clearance. The official imported-vehicle registration guide explains the later registration stage.
What does UK-to-South-Africa car shipping cost?
Use £900–£1,500 as a broad 2026 sea-freight planning range for a standard car. A sole-use container and oversized vehicles will cost more. Add UK collection, export documents and marine insurance. At destination, budget separately for customs taxes, port handling, clearing-agent fees, storage if delayed, roadworthy testing and registration.
| Cost line | Planning treatment | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sea freight | £900–£1,500 | Standard vehicle; quote determines actual route/method |
| UK collection | Usually £120–£350 | Depends on distance and vehicle condition |
| Documents and export entry | Usually £75–£150 | Confirm exactly what the quote includes |
| Marine insurance | Value-based | Choose cover deliberately |
| South African taxes and fees | Vehicle-specific | Get a written SARS/broker calculation |
How are import taxes calculated?
South African customs charges depend on the vehicle's classification, value and circumstances. Avoid generic online percentages presented as a guaranteed landed cost. Give the exact make, model, year, VIN, engine details, purchase invoice and freight value to a licensed South African clearing agent and ask for a calculation using current SARS rules.
The written estimate should separate customs duty, VAT, environmental or ad-valorem components where applicable, port charges and the broker's own fee. This is the safest way to protect the margin between the UK purchase price and the actual landed cost.
Documents to prepare
- Original V5C and proof of ownership.
- Purchase invoice and proof of payment.
- ITAC import permit issued before shipment.
- NRCS Letter of Authority.
- Passport, immigration or returning-resident evidence relevant to the application.
- Bill of lading and UK export declaration.
- Police or Interpol clearance requested for the South African process.
- Finance-settlement evidence if the car was previously financed.
The shipping process, in order
- Check personal eligibility. Confirm that your circumstance fits an official permitted category.
- Apply for approvals. Obtain ITAC and NRCS documentation before shipment.
- Price the landed cost. Get freight and local customs estimates against the exact vehicle.
- Book collection and export. Prepare the V5C, ownership documents and UK customs entry.
- Ship and pre-alert the broker. Send the bill of lading and approvals before arrival.
- Clear customs. Complete SARS and port formalities through the local agent.
- Complete police clearance and registration. Follow the provincial registration process before road use.
Which shipping method should I choose?
Where a suitable RoRo route is available, it is often the lower-cost approach for a running car. The vehicle must be empty and safe to drive for loading. A container provides an enclosed unit and is often chosen for valuable, classic or non-standard vehicles. The permit decision is the same either way; changing the shipping method does not bypass South Africa's import restrictions.
Get an itemised quote after eligibility is confirmed
RollShip can compare the UK collection, freight, export-document and insurance elements once you know the vehicle is admissible. Request a quote with the VIN, vehicle location and intended South African port. We will be clear about what is included, but the import permit and South African tax decision remain with the authorities and your local agent.
South Africa car import questions
Can anyone import a used car from the UK to South Africa?
No. Used-vehicle imports are restricted to approved circumstances. Returning South African nationals, permanent immigrants and limited special vehicle categories may qualify. Confirm your status with ITAC before doing anything else.
Can I apply for the permit after the car arrives?
No. Official guidance says the ITAC permit must be obtained before the vehicle is shipped. Loading first creates a serious risk of refusal, storage and return costs.
How long should I allow?
Five to seven weeks is a reasonable freight and handling planning range after permits are ready. Permit processing, sailing schedules and destination clearance can extend the total project.
Does a UK MOT replace the NRCS Letter of Authority?
No. An MOT may show the car met UK roadworthiness requirements on the test date, but it does not replace the South African NRCS approval or local registration checks.
