Ship a Car to Jamaica from the UK: Costs & 6-Year Rule

Shipping a standard car from the UK to Jamaica is best planned at £1,150 to £1,800 for freight, before collection, insurance, customs and destination fees. For an ordinary motor car or SUV, the major eligibility check is Jamaica's six-year age limit. Obtain the Trade Board import permit and required pre-inspection before the vehicle sails.

The short version

  • Planning freight. £1,150–£1,800, with roughly six to nine weeks as an end-to-end planning range.
  • Six-year limit. Jamaica's Trade Board states an age limit of six years for ordinary motor cars and SUVs.
  • Permit before arrival. Get the motor-vehicle import permit before shipping.
  • UK pre-inspection. Used vehicles imported from the UK require pre-shipment inspection.
  • No damaged or salvage cars. Jamaica Customs says damaged and salvage vehicles are prohibited.

What does it cost to ship a car to Jamaica?

Use £1,150–£1,800 as a broad 2026 freight estimate for a standard car. Route and method availability must be confirmed for the booking; do not assume every departure offers the same RoRo or container option. Larger vehicles and sole-use containers cost more. Add UK collection, documents, marine insurance and pre-inspection. Jamaican duties, port charges and the customs broker's fee are separate.

What is Jamaica's six-year rule?

The Trade Board Limited publishes a six-year age limit for an ordinary motor car or SUV. It publishes different limits for other categories, including motorcycles and some commercial vehicles, so category matters. Check the permitted model years shown in the current application guidance rather than trying to calculate from an advert's model description.

The Trade Board reiterated the ordinary car/SUV limit in a public notice warning about misinformation. Confirm the first-registration or manufacture evidence required for the exact vehicle before purchase.

Permit first. Jamaica requires the import permit before the vehicle arrives. Submit the vehicle details early enough to resolve any age or category issue before freight becomes non-refundable.

What else is required before shipping?

Jamaica Customs lists the motor-vehicle import documents and states that used vehicles imported from the United Kingdom require pre-inspection. It also says damaged and salvage vehicles are prohibited.

The official list includes the import licence, title, bill of lading, invoice, Bill of Sight where used, Tax Compliance Certificate and the electronic customs declaration. Motor-vehicle clearance is handled through a licensed customs broker, so appoint one before arrival.

How are Jamaican duties calculated?

Jamaica Customs explains that duties are calculated on the CIF basis: the vehicle value plus insurance and freight. The tax result then depends on vehicle classification and current rates. Engine size, fuel type and category can materially change the number.

Ask a licensed Jamaican customs broker for a written landed-cost calculation using the exact vehicle and your actual freight quote. This is much more reliable than a single generic duty percentage. Your decision should be based on purchase price plus freight, insurance, tax, port and broker costs together.

Documents to prepare

Step-by-step process

  1. Check model year and category. Confirm the vehicle falls within the Trade Board limit.
  2. Get the import permit. Do this before shipping, not after arrival.
  3. Arrange pre-inspection. Use the current approved process for UK vehicles.
  4. Confirm landed cost. Get an itemised freight quote and a separate broker tax calculation.
  5. Complete UK export and loading. File the customs entry and DVLA permanent-export notification.
  6. Pre-alert the Jamaican broker. Send original or electronic documents in the required form before discharge.
  7. Clear and register. Settle assessed charges and complete local vehicle registration.

Request a Jamaica shipping quote

RollShip's calculator now includes Jamaica as a broad starting range. For a current bookable option, request an itemised quote with the VIN, year, vehicle dimensions and UK collection address. We will state the offered route and method clearly rather than promising availability before checking the sailing.

Jamaica car shipping questions

How old can a car be to import into Jamaica?

The Trade Board publishes a six-year limit for ordinary motor cars and SUVs. Other categories can have different limits. Confirm the eligible year for the exact category before buying or shipping.

Can I ship the car before the import permit is approved?

No. The permit should be obtained before shipment or arrival. Shipping first exposes you to refusal, storage and return costs if the vehicle is not eligible.

Are salvage cars allowed?

Jamaica Customs states that damaged and salvage vehicles are prohibited. Do not ship one based on a seller's informal assurance.

How long does UK-to-Jamaica shipping take?

Six to nine weeks is a reasonable planning range including UK handling, sailing and Jamaican clearance. Carrier schedules and document readiness affect the actual result.
